Check out this relaxed and fun wedding at the Bond Weddings iN DIGBETH!

Dan and Lucan met in a night club in Birmingham when they were in their early 20’s and eight months after they moved in together Dan got down on one knee in their flat and proposed! They choose the Bond Weddings in Digbeth in Birmingham for their relaxed and fun wedding because they loved the industrial look and how cool the venue was. As we first got chatting they told me they were getting married on a bit of a budget so spending cutbacks caused them to transform their kitchen into their very own night club and I knew at that moment I was the photographer for them, who doesn’t love a kitchen dance party?!

“THE MORE WE EMAILED THE MORE WE WANTED YOU TO PHOTOGRAPH OUR WEDDING”.

And book me they did, I was booked from the ceremony to their first dance (and time for some drunken dancing of course) and after chatting with them loads I couldn’t wait for their wedding day to roll around. The sun shone for the first time in forrrrrever (and yes that is a Frozen reference), and I’ve honestly never seen the sky so blue. I arrived at the Bond just before everyone piled in ready for the ceremony. The theme was black and silver and Dan and Lucan and their Groomsmaids looked DROP DEAD GORGEOUS. The ceremony was short and super emotional. Then here was hugs to be had, booze to be drank and group shots to be taken, some of my fave ever group shots in fact, the Bond has this awesome industrial brick open top building and the light was casting some phenomenal shadows and it was the best thing ever. The sun set us all up to enjoy a delicious BBQ meal and after some funny and emotional speeches the couple and I sloped off for some photos around Digbeth. I’m a big fan of colour and Dan and Lucan were more than happy to go explore the street art surrounding The Bond. That’s one of my fave things about this venue, in the heart of Digbeth in Birmingham there is ever changing street art which can make for awesome portraits. As we arrived back many evening guests had arrived and it was time for more booze and their first dance! The day went by in a whirlwind and when they told me saying goodbye to me was like when E.T. goes home my heart totally melted.

That’s enough from me, scroll on down to see their awesome fun wedding at The Bond, and hear from the couple themselves about their wedding planning process!

How did you get started planning your wedding at the Bond in Birmingham?

After proposing, I looked for approved same sex marriage venues. I can’t remember exactly how long everything took to plan, it was booked 2 years in advance, we were discussing ideas for quite a long time. We enjoyed choosing our suits and enjoyed talking with Kate our wonderful photographer! Everything else was stressful and we didn't enjoy it. At one point I remember I had to double check we had booked to be getting married and not just having a Civil Ceremony, thankfully it was for marriage!

What made you choose the Bond as your Birmingham wedding venues?

I saw The Bond and I loved the look of it online. When we finally decided to get married, I remembered The Bond it was the first and only place we viewed. It was right up our street, we loved that industrial look and how cool it was!

How did you style your wedding and choose your decor?

We chose fairy lights in the ceremony at the front of the room where we said our vows. We wanted something simple and effective and we like lights. They were hanging in front of some silver material we bought, to match the silver on the chairs. We had a red carpet for the aisle, to add effect and to break up the colour theme a bit. Plus there's that VIP thing going on haha. Our name cards and table numbers all matched and again just wanted to keep it simple. They had a silver jewel on them to match the theme. The black table cloths and chair covers seemed different to us. I have only ever seen white. Plus we thought it was untraditional and brought some masculinity to our all male wedding. The centrepieces, after much stress of deciding what we should have were just glass vases with a glass plate underneath with a grey scented candle. As for our outfits we wanted to keep with our theme of black and silver, including our mixed and match Groomsmaids! We kept an open mind when searching for our wedding outfits and found our silver waistcoats first and then the Tuxes.

Tell me about your wedding day at the Bond, what were your favourite parts ?

Dan: We started the day by heading to the Bond to decorate it, everything was a mad rush! My parents came to our home with Mr & Mr glasses and a bottle of prosecco to get the ball rolling. Meanwhile we were still rushing! I even left without my speech and had to go back. When we got there the nerves kicked in and we were looking for a drink to settle us. Right before we walked down the aisle, I burst into tears and everyone who was about to walk down with us began to panic. Lucan told them all I was ok and not to fuss. Knowing me the way he does, he knew I'd be ok within seconds. It seemed that everyone walked down the aisle too soon and so quickly! Lucan was so calm and collected throughout the ceremony. I struggled at first. The first few things I had to repeat seemed impossible, as though I was trying to speak another language. But I soon relaxed. This is a total reverse of roles. I'm usually the more relaxed! After we had said our vows we both agreed, that it felt like an eternity before she pronounced us as married. While sitting at the table to sign the register, we felt so relaxed and that was a fantastic feeling. We felt over the moon and seeing everybody so happy for us really put us on a high. After we walked back up the aisle, we were taken into a room, where we had a glass of prosecco waiting for us. Even better. It gave us a few minutes to just breathe and try and take it in! Making a speech was a little scary at first, but it ended up being one of my favourite parts of the day. I was even able to get a few laughs. Going to the custard factory was fun. It just added to the experience of getting married in Digbeth. We love the place. The first dance was a little bit scary, but we got into it. We loved seeing how much fun people seemed to be having, I'm sure the awesome venue that the Bond is and the beautiful weather added to it. We just loved how so many people told us how emotional the day was and how much fun they had. Two members of staff from the Bond stayed past their shift ending just so they could see our first dance, we really appreciated that. It was just such a perfect day and nothing went wrong and that is the best bit.

What was it like working with me, Kate Jackson Photography?

After viewing your work online, we liked your relaxed style. Then we read your about me and thought you sounded like a really nice person! The more we emailed, the more we wanted you to shoot our wedding. Our meeting at Quarter Horse Coffee was great and we enjoyed your company. On the day it wasn't like you were our photographer, you were our guest. You were professional and not invasive to guests, friendly and made us laugh loads. We'd have been happy for you to have enjoyed yourself after finishing your work to have a drink with us.!We were told you would leave your food whilst you were supposed to be having a break sometimes to go and get some photos because you spotted something, that is dedication to your art. We thought you were just brilliant! We would totally recommend you to our best friends, and would tell them we wouldn’t go to their wedding unless they booked you!

Finally, if you could impart any words of wisdom to a couple planning their marriage and wedding day, what would they be and is there anything you would do differently?

Get someone else to plan your wedding. You won't get to spend as much time with everyone as you want to. Make sure you enjoy yourself as the day goes so quickly!
